Are You Oversharing? Social Media Etiquette
In the world of technology that we're currently accustomed to oversharing on social media has become the new norm for most of us. Some people overshare their personal business to get reactions. Some people are an open book and very transparent. Personally, I'm not an open book, but within the last year, I've been posting on all of my social medias at least once a day. I post for advertise my business and to share knowledge. I must admit my post is always tasteful and I try not to reveal too much unnecessary information that is irrelevant and not helpful to others. In other words I try to have a method behind my posting.
Why Do People Overshare?
People feel they have something to prove
Social media gives you a green light to do so
People aren't aware what they are oversharing.
People feel that they are missing out i.e when they see their friends posting vacations and celebrations
Examples of Oversharing
Revealing issues in a relationship
Venting excessively about your emotions
Posting multiple times a day
How Oversharing Can Effect Your Mental Health?
You will seek validation from “likes" or comments if you don’t receive the appropriate amount of “ likes” you will post even more to seek the attention.
You will begin self gratifying behavior when you get the attention from social media which can foster unhealthy behavior.
How Oversharing Can Be Detrimental?
Safety Purposes- You should be wise in sharing everywhere you're going, and what you're doing. There are weirdos out here looking for their next prey. You don’t want to give them free access to your life and home while you're away. A safety precaution will be to publish your photos when you get back from vacation instead of posting while you're on vacation if there is no one at your home.
Morale- You do not want to give off a bad impression of yourself because you chose to vent or post an inappropriate video or picture. Our image and self worth should be important to us.
Employers look at social media accounts to get a better understanding and learn about the person they are trying to interview or hire.
Also if you want to start a business soon or if you already have a business you want to be mindful about your content. You can either gain or lose potential customers by your post. Just like employers, potential buyers and customers visit your social media to gain insight on you, or if they can trust you with their money or if they should buy your product or pay for your service.
Lastly when you overshare you're not living in the moment, you're missing out on the fun and tranquility of that moment on your vacation that you spent your hard earned money to obtain. Oversharing can keep you from happiness and fully enjoying life. When I first started blogging/vlogging I missed out on some great moments because I was concerned about “ capturing the moment” so I had to watch the videos I made to relive the moment. Now I’m more intentional about enjoying my whole experience rather than capturing the moment.
In closing, I charge each of you to scale back a little if you've experienced some of the effects of oversharing. You can take little steps toward this goal. Before you hit the post or publish button, say to yourself why am I posting this picture or video, what message am I trying to get across, and how will this post make me look when it is published.
