Tough Times Survival Kit

Hi yall, who all have been going through some rough times lately due to unknown circumstances, uncontrolled situations, economy, family issues, finances, health, social issues, feeling overwhelmed, etc ? I can attest to many of these issues. As a mental health clinician my job is to assist my patients with finding balance and developing a healthy approach to manage their problems. These are some tips on how to overcome tough times.

Avoid putting a label on yourself that hems you in or casting yourself as a victim of life. Speak life over your situation so you can develop hope and strengthen your faith. Create and recite daily affirmations.

The more uncertain our future, the more prone we are to turning our forecasts into fearcasts, conjuring up all array of imagined troubles.

Ways to avoid sinking in your negative thoughts are to take action by doing something you enjoy doing, start on that project you didn't finish, exercise, journal, take a walk, etc. All of these things build up your emotional resilence and to distract yourself from the inner negativity.

All emotions are legitimate and need to be validated. Denying, minimalizing and masking the difficult emotions that naturally rise up when we are facing challenges doesn’t make them go away. It just makes them bury deeper until they eventually get expressed in unhealthy and destructive ways.

Is a burden shared really a burden halved? Who can say. But it is certainly a burden lightened. Various studies including the Harvard Longitudinal Study found that people with strong social connections were more resilient when life’s pressures mounted than people without them. When you are feeling overwhelmed, I recommend that you talk to a trustworthy individual that can offer you sound advice. Also it's therapeutic to get stuff off your chest.

“We can never underestimate the strength of the human spirit. We may feel utterly crushed but within us is a force that can rise again, even from the darkest times

Lastly, Reframe challenges as opportunities for growth, set small, achievable goals to build confidence, and practice emotional regulation through stress-reduction techniques like deep breathing. Building mental toughness is a process; practice self-compassion, acknowledge your progress, and stay flexible in your approach to life's difficulties.
