All 80's

I was born in 1980, the best era ever. This picture was taken when I was in the 6th grade. In this blog, I will take you back in time over 40 years ago. The 80's were the era when the sony Walkman, boom boxes, VHS tapes, and arcade cabinets were invented.

Bold Neon & Pastels: Bright, eye-catching colors and power suits defined the corporate and casual wear Chronically Vintage. In highschool I wore a brand called L. A. Gears. My shoes were pink and green with the matching shoe strings.

Big Hair: Massive perms, crimped hair, and heavy hairspray were the standard for both men and women. In middle school I wore the jerri curls, a style called the mushroom, a pixie cut, box braids, and finger waves.

Layering & Denim: Acid-washed denim, oversized bomber jackets, and overalls (often worn with one strap unbuckled) were staples. I remembered wearing jumpers similar to what I have on in the photo, jean and leather jackets.

Some 80s movies are still entertaining to watch. I grew up watching

  • Soul Train

  • Show Time At The Apollo

  • Star Search, House Party

  • New Kids On The Block

  • Coming To America

  • Saved By The Bell

  • Mighty Mouse

  • Duck Tails

  • Power Rangers

  • Smurfs

  • Incedible Hulk

  • Star Trek, etc.

Some of my favorite girl and boy groups were :

  • Kriss Kross

  • New Edition

  • Military Vanilli

  • Kid and Play

  • Salt & Pepa

  • TLC

  • SWV

80's candy was the best. When I was in middle school, I remembered walking across the street to the convenient store in my neighborhood. In my opinion the store owner had the best snacks. I remembered buying strawberry and lemon iced cookies, one cent bubble gum, now and laters, chips and soda. Back then everything was cheap. Two dollars went a long way when buying snacks.

The 1980s are best known as a golden age of pop culture, characterized by the launch of MTV, the rise of blockbuster movies, and bold fashion choices.

It was a transformative decade defined by the Cold War's end, the onset of the AIDS epidemic, and the dawn of the digital age with personal computers.

ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) was a grassroots political action group formed in New York City on March 12, 1987, to fight the devastating AIDS epidemic. Driven by government inaction and rampant homophobia, it used confrontational, nonviolent civil disobedience to force medical breakthroughs, lower drug prices, and secure patient rights.

Disasters: The year is frequently remembered as one of the darkest of the decade due to two catastrophic events: the Space Shuttle Challenger explosion in January and the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in April.

All seven crew members aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger died when the spacecraft broke apart 73 seconds after liftoff on January 28, 1986.The crew included:Francis R. "Dick" Scobee, Commander Michael J. Smith, PilotJudith A. Resnik, Mission Specialist Ellison S. Onizuka, Mission SpecialistRonald E. McNair, Mission SpecialistChrista McAuliffe, Payload Specialist (Teacher in Space)Gregory B. Jarvis, Payload Specialist

Ronald Erwin McNair was born on October 21, 1950, in Lake City, South Carolina. The second of three boys born to Carl, a mechanic, and Pearl, a teacher, McNair displayed an early aptitude for technical matters, earning the nickname "Gizmo."

Ronald McNair was an MIT-trained physicist who specialized in laser research before joining NASA in the late 1970s. In February 1984, he became just the second African American to reach space, serving as a mission specialist aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger. On January 28, 1986, he was one of the seven crew members killed when the Challenger shockingly exploded 73 seconds after liftoff.

Ronald Reagan was elected as the 40th President of the United States on November 4, 1980. Running against incumbent Democrat Jimmy Carter, Reagan won a massive landslide victory

Reagan Presidency: Ronald Reagan's administration dominated national politics, pushing free-market capitalism and leading the country through the latter stages of the Cold War.

Lastly, look at the food prices in the 80s and compare them to what you spend for the same items in present day.

Milk: $1.59 – $2.18 per gallon

  1. Bread: $0.50 per loaf

  2. Eggs: $0.80 – $0.87 per dozen

  3. Apples: $0.39 per pound

  4. Bacon: $1.69 per pound

  5. White Rice: $0.42 – $0.47 per pound

  6. Flour: $0.79 for a 5-pound

What do you think about the 80s lifestyle and trends? Do you think there is a huge difference in how society today vs the 80's? Do you think the world is revolving to how things once were? I will love to hear your thoughts on this topic. Feel free to comment. While you're here, check out the other stories on the site. Thanks for reading my blog ❤️
