Traditional Foods: The passing down of recipes from generation to generation.

I grew up in a little town, Kingstree South Carolina. Kingstree is known for its cropping and farming. My paternal grandfather earned his living by working in the fields picking tobacco. I remembered in the summer months I use to visit my grandparents. While my grandfather worked in the fields, my grandmother ensured my grandfather stayed well nourished and strong by cooking comfort meals such as: rice, fried chicken., fat back with greens, butter beans, corn bread, fried sausage, eggs, home made biscuits, barbecue chicken, and macaroni and cheese. She made a mean ice tea. My grandmother cooked three hearty meals a day, she didn't miss a beat

My family would gather at my grandparents house for Thanksgiving, Christmas,Easter, and Sunday dinners. My favorite holiday gathering at my grandparents house was Christmas Dinner. My grandfather raised hogs, so every Christmas Eve he and my uncles would slaughter a hog, strip it, clean it, and build a pit to cook the hog. Inside of the house my grandmother baked sweet potatoe pies, pound cakes, chocolate cakes fruit cakes, jelly cakes, and banana pudding. Also she made macaroni and cheese, potatoe salad, fresh collard greens, baked beans and rice. Our drink was sweet tea.

This weekend I met and talk with someone who had a similar tradition as me she is, Tracey Richardson. Tracey Richardson is the CEO of Lillies of Charleston. She is based in Charleston, South Carolina and her recipes from her spices, hotsauce and barbecue sauce were passed down from her father and her Aunt Lillie, that’s where the name Lillies of Charleston derived from. Tracy shared with me that her Aunt Lillie prepared the meals for the familly to get together and enjoy.

Tracey's dad owned a restaurant in the 80s in Charleston, SouthCarolina once call the Rib Shack. Tracey stated after the restaurant closed, people wanted the recipe for the sauces. Tracey decided to serve the community and keep the family legacy going. She has packaged and sold the sauces and recipes of the spices that was used in her family restaurant. Today Lillies of Charleston is known for its award winning hot and spicy flavor which is great with meat or vegetables, dips, pasta dishes, and salads. The ingredients is natural vegan, no fructose or corn syrup.

To learn more or purchase her hot sauce, spices, or barbecue sauce go to lilliesofcharleston.com. The spices could also be purchased at Food Lion, Amazon, and Harris Teeter .These spices make great gifts for Mothers Day, Father's Day, Christmas, Birthday,or any occasion.
