Oppression Speaks

Oppression is real and it still exist in certain race, class and gender. Some ethnic groups and class of people have experienced oppression at some point of their lives which is awfully sad and unfair. Oppression is experienced on jobs, in the media, in certain communities, universities, etc.

It's been proven that students who graduate from an Ivy League College is granted an interview or a job opportunity quicker than a student that graduated from an HBCU.

Surburban neighborhoods have better supermarkets, facilities, and schools than rural or impoverished neighborhoods. Money is spent on creating a more inviting leisure experience in rich areas than allocating funds to upgrade urban facilities and schools, buildings and highways.

There are three types of oppression that I will cover they are: Interpersonal, Internalized, and Institutional.

Interpersonal Oppression is when a group is better than another and have the right to control the other. Examples of interpersonal racism is racist jokes, stereotypes, harassment of African Americans, mistreatment of women, violence, belittling, and ignoring women. ( www.groc.ed)

Internalized Oppression - oppressed people internalized the damage that is being done to them. They begin to feel bad about themselves, they struggle with their feelings of heaviness. The oppressed feel powerless and they start to put themselves down. This can turn into passive aggressive behavior towards people in their ethnic group.

Institutional Oppression- when a group have the right to control the other group by way of laws, legal system, education, hiring policies, political power, public policies, and housing development. (www.groc.edu). In some companies women make less than men. One out of every African American men are in jail or on probation.

We may not be able to fully stop oppression but there are ways to heal from it and begin to overcome it they are;

  • Build unity among the people in your group

  • Speak positive about yourself and others

  • Support each others and the leaders of the group

  • Contribute and give back to local communities

  • Challenge the patterns of racism and oppression

I wanted to shed light on oppression because in order to heal from it we have to know what we are healing from. Often times I witness people being hard on themselves, worrying and depressed. Sometimes we don’t know why we're upset, hurting people that helped us or why we're acting a certain way. Alot of these emotions stem from oppression. It's time to heal, get up, and be the person God intended for us to be.
