5 Best Ways To Decompress

How are you able to manage or stay calm when you are a full time employee, operate a business , a student or if you have children. Having extra obligations in addition to your busy schedule can evoke stress.

Stress can manifest in cognitive, emotional, physical, or behavioral ways, with symptoms ranging from mild to severe.

Cognitive: Difficulty concentrating, memory issues, negativity, constant worrying, and trouble making decisions

Emotional: Feelings of fear, anger, sadness, worry, numbness, or frustration

Physical: Headaches, body pains, stomach issues, skin rashes, and worsening of chronic health problems

Behavioral: Increased use of alcohol, drugs, and other substances

My mission in this blog post is to help you become more aware of causes of stress, and ways to decompress to eliminate stress. Some things we can not control i.e. bad treatment from others, children getting sick, work task, time oriented deadlines, or other unexpected issues

To "decompress stress" means to actively relax and release built-up tension, like a diver slowly returning to normal pressure, by engaging in calming activities to restore mental and emotional balance after stressful situations.

My way of decompressing is allowing myself time to unwind from a heavy clinic day. As a clinician my job is to a be a good listener, assist patients with unpacking their issues, provide empathy and support with their therapeutic goals. Some days I have to help manage crisis and make referrals. It can be alot going on in my work day. It's important for me to decompress after my work day. I don't want to project any unwanted emotions unto my family. These are five activities you can do to decompress after a heavy work day or stressful event…

Nature: Go for a walk in a park or just sit outside to breathe fresh air. Going for a drive is a great way to clear your head, and reframe your thoughts.

Music/Sounds: Listen to calming music or nature sounds. I like listening to music or watching mindless t.v. with my favorite cup of coffee

Aromatherapy: Use essential oils with a diffuser or in a soak. Going to the nail salon serves as an reward and selfcare for the hard work you endured. I recommend that men get foot and body massages to decompress.

Disconnect: Put away your phone and turn off screens. Going for a walk,,getting out in nature is helpful in improving chemical imbalances. It is recommended that we exercise 30 minutes a day to improve your physical health as well.

Comfort Food/Drink: Bake, cook a healthy meal, or enjoy a warm, caffeine-free drink. Baking goodies puts me in a happy place. I love tasty treats.

What are some things you do decrease stress, stay healthy, well balance or to keep clarity? Is there certain products you use? Do you practice a morning or night time routine? We will love to hear your ideas, feel free to share them in the comments section.
