1865
Hello, I will be highlighting a few facts of how Juneteenth became a national holiday and events post Emancipation Proclamation.
2000 Union Troops arrived in Galveston Bay Texas. 250,000 enslaved black people in the state were free by executive decree.
June 19th, 1865 is when the confederate community of enslaved Americans in Galveston, Texas received word that they had been freed from bondage.
5 states where slavery was still legal in January 1863 and were unaffected by the Emancipation Proclamation were: Maryland, Missouri, West Virginia, Delaware, and Kentucky.
After slavery some freed slaves fled from the neighborhood of their owners while others became wage laborers for their former owners.
After slavery was abolished, freed slaves had to think of ways they could support themselves and their families. Also ex slaves wanted to begin to locate their missing family members. As we know today it takes resources and money to build legacies.
Freedman's Bureau provided assistance to tens of thousands of enslaved people and impoverished whites in the Southern States and the District of Columbia. The assistance helped purchased lands, locate family members and legalize marriages. Successes from the freedom bureau were more than 1000 African American schools were built, and most of the first colleges in the United States were founded.
African Americans still faced roadblocks oppression and struggles. Ex slaves had to adapt to being free. Freed slaves began to realize that justice was not completely on their side. Some of the injustices that African American faced were:
Criminal Injustice
Education
Health Care
Housing
Employment
Systematic Discrimination
General Sherman planned to give newly freed families “forty acres and a mule” that was short lived. January 16th, 1865, Sherman issued his Special Field Order that commanded that 400 000 acres of property confiscated from confederate landowners be redistribute to black families in 40 acre plots.
African Americans endured so much over the centuries, and overcome alot as well. Juneteenth is our time to support each other, celebrate the festivities, create goals for ourselves, and persevere.
I wish everyone have an amazing Juneteenth weekend. Thanks for visiting my site, while you're here check our the other stories and go to my homepage and follow me on my socials. Thanks again.💚❤️🖤💛
