This is a topic that most parents dread but we must deal with the issue at hand . I've been talking to few parents in my community and I asked them how they felt about schools reopening and if they were letting their children go back to school and some of the responses I’ve gotten was, “ they're not comfortable with sending their child back to school in the midst of this pandemic.”Also I’ve heard parents requiring about signing their child up for home schooling.
According to the CDC, the more people a student or staff member interacts with and the longer that interaction is the higher the risk of contacting Covid-19.
Today our governor Henry McMaster held a press conference, he stated that, “ we need to give parents options and a choice to have face to face instruction. He states that he can not restrict learning to virtual learning when most of the students does not have access to the internet. He also asked South Carolina school districts to provide a return to school plan to state officials by July 17th and also provide an option for parents to choose whether they want to send their children back to school five days a week or select virtual learning.
Governor McMaster states, virtual education is not as good as face to face interaction with students,He proposed that the children get back into the classrooms.
A spokesperson at the press conference stated, “ children stuck in isolation become victims of abuse, and neglect or become further behind academically. Teachers need to lay their eyes on children to access issues that may go on in the home. It was also stated that 10,000 children have not been located since schools closed in March. They suggested that parents register their children so they can be accounted for. Another issue that was brought up was South Carolina students can not afford not to have face to face interaction. According to data most children are not grasping the material via virtual learning and since the closing of schools closed most children have fell behind academically in math and language arts .It was also stated if the children that were struggling academically were in the third grade being promoted to the fourth grade they are still on the third grade level.
