DIY T-shirt/Bag Design Using Puffy Paint

I've learned and enjoyed a lot of fun DIY activities in this quarantine. Since I am home trying to get use to this new norm why not make ithe best of it. I've been watching YouTube videos to learn how to do cool stuff that that I'm interested in learning to do.. like personalized bags, t-shirts license tags etc., and I always wanted to learn how to make my own. Since watching the different youtubers I’ve learned with the right materials and time we can do alot of projects ourselves.

The benefits of doing it yourself is that you can save money, you can practice and work on your creativity until you become really good at it and you can feel good knowing that you did the work yourself.

The above photos are puff paint designs you can decorate almost any fabric with puff paint such as: tote bags, socks, hats, shirts, etc. Laura Quatro has a youtube channel on Puff Paint Tshirt Craft DIY. This is an awesome resource on how to create your own items using puff paint. I’ve recently did a design on a clutch bag that I bought from the arts and crafts section in Walmart.

You can make your own puff paint instead of buying it. To learn how to make your own puff paint f ollow Handmade Charlotte at handmadecharlotte.com to learn how to make other arts and crafts. According to Charlotte, these are the steps to creating your own puffy paint, you need:

  • Apple Barrel Acrylic Paint

  • Paint brush

  • Squeeze Bottle

  • Salt

  • Flour

  • Cardboard

  • Spoon and plastic cup

    • 2 tbsp of salt and 2 tbsp of flour into a plastic cup and mix together

    • Add a squeeze of paint into the cup, mix together, add a splash of water, keep mixing, add paint and water at the same time until the mixture is smooth and the consistency is similar to frosting. Transfer the mixture into a plastic squeeze bottle.

If you want to design your own t-shirt with your homemade puff paint these are the instructions:

    • Cut recycled cardboard scraps into peices about the size of postcards.

Find a safe work area. Find an open area that's easy to clean and put down things like newspaper over your surface in case paint spills or splatters.

    • Iron the freezer paper to the shirt. Run an iron over the freezer paper once so it just sticks to the fabric.

    • Squeeze out the puffy paint over the stencils.Squeeze out the puffy paint to fill in your stencils so you can create the design you want to on your shirt.

    • Remove the freezer paper- once you've decorated the shirt to your liking, gently peel off the freezer paper.

    • Let the paint dry for four hours. Put your t-shirt in a safe place during this time, where it will not be disturbed

    • Wash your t- shirt after 72 hours. After 72 hours it is safe to wash your puffy paint t-shirt. Do not wash your t-shirts before the paint has had at least 72 hours, roughly three days to set.

This is a fun therapeutic activity. You can do alot with this activity this is a great for fundraisers ,birthday and slumber parties. This is also great for giveaways and they makes great presents. So have fun with your DIY shirts, bags.socks, hats, etc. Practice makes perfect. I will love to hear from you drop down in the comment section and share with us your puffy paint creations.
