Black History In South Carolina

Hello, I’m a native of South Carolina. I decided to highlight my state and to share how African Americans from South Carolina played a role in the Civil Rights Movement. South Carolina contributed to the culture, trends, slangs etc.Tourist from all over comes to South Carolina to visit these attractions:

  • Charleston Museum

  • Fort Sumter

  • Congaree National Park

  • Myrtle Beach

  • Golf Courses

  • Brick Haven Garden

  • Hilton Head Island

  • Riverbanks Zoo

  • South Carolina Aquarium

    Famous cuisines originated from South Carolina are:

  • Chicken Bog

  • Gullah Red Rice

  • Shrimp And Grits

Gullah is a culture that is associated with the low country area of South Carolina. The gullah people of the Low Country and coastal areas of South Carolina are culturally the most distinctive African population in the United States.

Yvonne Grovner teach basket making classes a part of the geechee culture. Basket making began in Africa and came with the slaves that were brought to the American South in the 1600s.

Gullah Geeche were able to retain some of their African traditions, including the ring shout. It's a ritual in which participants move counter clockwise in a circle while shuffling and stomping their feet and clapping their hands in call and response fashion.

These are a few prominent African Americans Heros from South Carolina. Pictured above is Septima Clark. She is a key figure in the Civil Rights Movement.

Mary McLeod Bethune at the age of 10 Bethune became the first and only child in her family to go to school. She was born July.10, 1875 near Mayesville, South Carolina..She founded the Daytona Beach Literacy and Industrial School for Training negro girls.The Historically Black College that she founded is currently named as Bethune-Cookman University located in Daytona Beach Florida.

Harvey Grant is notably the first black student that attended Clemson University and the first black mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Dr. Matilda Evans is the first African Americsn woman to practice medicine in South Carolina.

Modjeska Monteith Simkins considered a matriarch of the Civil Rights movement in South Carolina.

Robert Small is a war hero during the Civil War who famously commanded a confederate ship to escape to the union side.

South Carolina is rich with lots of history. South Carolina is growing. South Carolina receives 19 million annual visitors. South Carolina is known for its southern charm, coastal cities, and hospitality. Charleston, South Carolina is the most visited city in South Carolina. South Carolina major economic sector is advanced manufacturer located primarily in the Upstate and the Low Country.
